$8.99 wine wins gold medal
AS THE weekend train rolls into the station of life, consider this something of a community service announcement.
An $8.99 bottle of wine from Dan Murphy's just won a gold medal at the 2018 International Wine Challenge in the UK.
The 2017 Dan Murphy's Cleanskin riesling from South Australia's Clare Valley wine region
is the bottle that took out the prize (and that you will probably see in the clutches of wine fans all over Australia this weekend).
The wine is described as having a "vibrant, crisp structure".
The London International Wine Challenge is one of the largest and most influential wine shows in the world and is meticulously judged by some of the world's most experienced wine judges, including the UK's Tim Atkin MW, Oz Clarke, Jamie Goode and Charles Metcalfe.
Taking out a Gold medal means that show judges including leading wine critics, sommeliers, buyers and restaurateurs dubbed the bottle to be near perfect as they tasted the wines blind, meaning that show judges were kept unaware of the wines' identity to ensure impartiality.
According to Dan Murphy's Wine Expert, Andrew Caillard, the gold medal success of their cleanskin riesling against a field of well-respected wine brands illustrates the great levelling experience of tasting wines blind.
"This classic Clare Valley riesling displays all the fruit definition, precision and mouth-watering freshness expected of an ultra-premium wine brand yet sells for less than $9 a bottle," he says.
"Based on the experienced opinion of great palates, this wonderful result reflects a winemaking team that is committed to sourcing the very best fruit and making the finest wines possible within every regional genre and price point."
Commenting on the award Dan Murphy's Head of Wine, George Radman said, "The Dan Murphy's team are devoted to selecting the most standout parcels from the thousands of wine samples they taste each year.
"This 2017 Clare Valley cleanskin is as zestful as it is affordable and is a true representation of the quality that consumers can expect from our cleanskin range."
Run, don't walk.
