Big movers in NAPLAN results

TAROOM State School have topped their Banana Shire counterparts to have the best NAPLAN results in the region.

An independent analysis of five years of NAPLAN results has revealed Taroom State School as the top performing Banana Shire school in the Year 5 and Year 9 tests between 2015 and 2019.

NAPLAN is the National Asessment Program of Literacy and Numeracy.

Over that five-year period, Taroom State School had the highest average Year 5 and Year 9 yearly NAPLAN results than any other school in the region, scoring an average of 2,473 each year in Year 5 and 2,808 in Year 9.

Those yearly average results have given the Taroom Year 5 cohort a rank of 405 and the Year 9 cohort a rank of 249 among other Queensland schools NAPLAN results over the last five years.

Taroom State School principal, Angela Heslin said that improving the literacy and numeracy of her students had been the top priority.

“We analysed all available data to identify specific areas for improvement and engaged a staff member as a lead literacy coach, providing regular staff professional development to ensure a consistent approach to the teaching of writing across the school,” Mrs Heslin said.

“With regards to Numeracy, over the past few years we have timetabled weekly numeracy lessons from Prep to Year 8.

“All staff have demonstrated commitment to our school’s explicit improvement agenda and we are pleased with our NAPLAN results again this year. “

To find how each school performed between 2015 and 2019, their average scores for each year were combined and the yearly average found.

Special schools, schools with fewer than 20 students enrolled in either year, and schools that did not report any results for NAPLAN subjects in either year were excluded from the analysis.

The figures were independently compiled from the Federal Government’s MySchool website.
