IN ANOTHER milestone for Biloela netball, four girls have been selected for the 2020 Capricorn Netball Academy squad.

Zali Eckel, Zali Middleton, Brylea Griffiths and Caitlin Boothby from Biloela Netball Association were chosen on November 23.

Biloela Netball Association coach Shari Hancock said the regional Capricorn Netball Academy Squad was for girls aged 14-16 aimed at being selected in the under-16 Capricorn Claws squad which competed at the State Championships annually.

“The girls are initially identified by their local association and there were 76 girls registered throughout the Capricorn region who attended the camp and tried out for the academy squad,” Hancock said.

“From there a squad of 20 are selected.”

Eckel and Middleton performed well at this year’s State Championships in October where Hancock, who coached the Claws squad, noted they could hold their own skill wise with the rest of Queensland.

Association coaches across the Capricorn region will work closely with the Capricorn Netball Academy Squad coaching staff throughout 2020, aiming to improve the selected players through training with the academy squad and at the local level.

Hancock said training in the Capricorn Academy Squad would give her girls the best opportunity to work on the skills the Claws selectors want for the 2020 State Championships.

“They’ll be a focus on fitness levels this year, the trials included fitness testing so we have baseline data.”

“In addition to the netball skills there will be a specific focus on defending as a unit and crosscourt attack.”

The Biloela girls will head off to the Capricorn Academy Squad’s first training camp in February 2020.
