A LITTLE boy was rescued from a trench after a four-hour ordeal that began when he fell into the hole and sand began piling up around him.
The eight-year-old had fallen 2m into the ditch in Jandabup, Perth where he became trapped about 4pm local time on Sunday.
Firefighters, police officers and paramedics worked into the night at the Tulloch Court home and the child was pulled to safety about 8pm.
The boy suffered minor injuries and was flown to hospital with his mum.
Firefighters said it was a very delicate and technical operation because the boy was trapped in an awkward position and the surrounding ground was unstable, which complicated the rescue operation. The moment he was rescued onlookers broke into loud applause.
The West Australian reported the boy’s father jumped in to try and rescue his son after dirt from the trench covered the child.
The boy was seen on a stretcher hugging a toy bear close to his chest.
