BILOELA businesses are being urged to illuminate their town with festive cheer by adorning their premises in Christmas lights and taking part in the Callide Dawson Chamber of Commerce Christmas lights competition.
Callide Dawson Chamber of Commerce president Steve Bates said the contest was a chance to brighten the moods of passers-by and he hoped plenty of businesses would join in.
Mr Bates, also owner of Steve's Barber Shop, said the competition was held last year, but only three businesses took part.
So this year, he was hoping locals would support the initiative which would also put them in the running to win one of three prizes.
First prize has been donated by Rebel FM and is a $1000 worth of radio advertising, second prize is $100 voucher from Home Timber & Hardware Biloela and third prize is a $50 voucher for Home Timber & Hardware Biloela.
"This is about community and about rallying together, and having a bit of pride in the town,” Mr Bates said.
He said that while Christmas was a time of festivities, it was also a season that highlighted the absence of family and friends who lived far away, and it could be a stressful period for some.
"I think the Christmas lights can be uplifting at this time of the year, when people are thinking of family and friends they can't be with - just anything to brighten their mood is good.
"Having a competition like this can help people destress.”
He said most people would put their lights up on December 1 and judging would be held later in December.
"I have a 4ft inflatable Santa to put up! Living in a small community is really important and it's good when we can come together doing something like this.”
To enter the Christmas lights competition, string up your Christmas lights and then post a picture to the Callide Dawson Chamber of Commerce Facebook page.
Judges will view the lights before winners are announced.
