Finals or bust for rugby league club

THE Biloela Panthers have set themselves some lofty goals for the 2020 season.

Following the club’s AGM on November 26, president of the Biloela Panthers Rugby League Club Pat Barron said he would be disappointed if his three senior sides didn’t make the finals in the 2020 season.

“We have a really young A Grade side as well and a number of fellas who have come through our U19s system and had their first year of A Grade this year,” Barron said.

“With another year under their belt they’re all going to be really good A Grade players and they are training hard to do that.”

Barron said a meeting in a fortnight’s time in Rockhampton would change the format from U20s to U19s for the 2020 season, which would greatly advantage his club.

“A lot of the Rockhampton clubs struggle because they have a lot of fellas involved in the U20s Capras side,” Barron said.

“We ran fourth in that competition this year and just because only a couple of Rockhampton clubs had a few better footballers.

“We’re strong in our U19s/U20s with 20-25 players on that team this season gone.”

The Panthers have historically been the David in the battle against Goliath, which are the Rockhampton teams that make up half of the Rockhampton Senior Rugby League competition.

Last season the A Grade squad finished fifth and missed the finals on percentage, the Reserve Grade side ended the year two games out of the top four and the U20s scalped a finals’ spot.

“There were talks in the club to have just A Grade and U20s this year,” Barron said.

“We’re getting good numbers at training now and we are going to make a decision before Christmas with what we do about that.

“Fifteen to 20 players rocked up for the first session with Graham Middlebrook, our A Grade coach.”

Pre-season training for the Biloela Panthers is Thursday 6pm from the Biloela Panthers fields with the last session for 2019 on December 12.

All interested or returning players welcome.
