Fund raising for cancer treatment
KIRSTY Peake was in shock when she saw her number 163 won her a new Mitsubishi Mirage in the 'Together we can make a difference' New Year's Eve Draw.
"I was in shock about winning it at and I thought they had the wrong number,” Kirsty said.
"Never in a million years did I think I would win it.”
The draw was for Biloela local Gerritt Oosthuizen or better known as 'Os' who is suffering from brain cancer.
Os woke up mid-November paralysed and very sick and was rushed to Rockhampton Hospital with suspected internal bleeding.
After tests and scans it was discovered Os had stage four brain cancer.
He was given two months to live and was told through the public health system there was a two-month waiting period for treatment.
Os met world famous brain cancer specialist Dr Teo in Sydney December last year. He was put on radiation treatment and wife Anthea had him on a strict diet and natural remedies.
There will be chemo- therapy early January and Os wants to return to work later in the month with a clearance from Dr Teo.
But paying $60,000 for treatment has hurt his finances.
Linemac Dealer Principal Al Grimshaw with Kylie Dittman and Virginia Atto rallied to Os' cause and had a meeting to help with fundraising ideas by raffling off a new car.
"We helped to raise $20,000 for Os in three weeks and he said many times without the raffle money he would not have been able see Dr Teo and he would be close to dying,” Mr Grimshaw said.
"He (Os) is extremely grateful and humbled by everyone that has supported him.”
