GIVING BACK: Providing happy Christmas for all

THE SEASON of giving is in full swing for volunteers at Biloela’s Vinnies store.

Volunteers are busy packaging up loads of Christmas hampers to deliver to those in need through the St Vincent de Paul Society’s Vinnies Christmas Appeal.

St Vincent de Paul Society Conference member Gay Fraser said Vinnies were pleading for donations this Christmas.

“Christmas can be a very lonely time for some people, especially when you have no money,’” Mrs Fraser said.

“A little goes a long way and 100 per cent of donations always go to the people in need or victims of any appeal.

“We’ve had one lady come in recently and instruct us to give her donation towards helping the homeless in our area.”

The amount of hampers that can be delivered to those in hardship is determined by the community’s generosity.

“It’s getting harder to receive donations due to the drought conditions and state of the economy that’s affecting everybody,” Mrs Fraser said.

“We’re not supported by a Government body or anything. All the money the store makes pays for the overheads and any profits all go to supporting people.”

As a Conference member, Mrs Fraser works alongside the Biloela Vinnies and shop volunteers, providing aid or comfort anyway she can.

“Our hampers usually contain some Christmas sweets, canned food that won’t go off and for the young ones, a couple of toys.”

Donations to the Vinnies Christmas Appeal can be made at vinnies.org.au, phoning 13 18 12, or at any Vinnies Shop.
