Kombi coffee venture in Rocky's East St all out of steam
WILL Fowles is waving goodbye to his vintage coffee van. The Laneway Cafe has closed, after just six months of service.
The coffee shop spiced up Rockhampton's East Street with its trendy style.
Drinks were served from an iconic VW Kombi van and the industrial style walls were decorated with local artwork and spray painted skateboards.
Owner Mr Fowles said the venue would retain its unique style.
He said it would be used as a function space in the future.
"It was well received, but not to the point where it was sustainable in its current format," he said.
"All hospitality places need to reinvent themselves or they'll suffer commercially."
Mr Fowles said he would continue to support local artists.
He said he would like to use the space as a gallery in the future.
"We've had lots of interest from local artists," Mr Fowles said.
"I think it's a space that's quite unique to Rocky."
The closure was announced yesterday on the cafe's Facebook page and locals soon voiced their disappointment.
"It was a very cool idea and great coffee," Lauri Rutherford said.
"Awesome coffee and hospitality," Tim Hannay wrote.
"What a shame! Wishing you all the best in your ventures," Rocky Pickers said.
