Little athletes set bar high
ATHLETICS: Biloela Little Athletics has been setting the track and field records on fire with an outstanding effort from its talented youth.
Local athletes attended the annual Gladstone Athletics Club Combined Events Carnival that attracted 165 entrants at Central Queensland University Oval last weekend.
The club's success was highlighted by age champions under-17 Girls Ashten Wright and under-9 Boys Clae Thornton.
Jamen Goodger was a close second in the under-8 Boys and Ruby Thornton was third in the under-8 Girls.
Club spokeswoman Joselyn Thornton said it was a strong level of competition and the local athletes performed well.
"It's our off season and to come together and compete against little athletes from other centres was a great effort,” Thornton said.
"The athletes are looking forward to the upcoming season and to keep improving on their performances.”
Competitors cam from Bundaberg, Rockhampton, Gladstone, Isis, Gayndah, Monto and Childers.
In September last year, 18 athletes competed at regionals with 61 personal bests, six new centre records and two new regional records to give them bragging rights.
They came home with 33 gold, 21 silver, 11 bronze, five firsts and a third in the under-8s.
All 15 of the under-9 to under-17 athletes qualified for the State Championships.
The first trial days for the start of the 2019 season will be March 10 and 17 with the first competition day (start of the season) on April 28.
Training will be held on the bottom oval of the Biloela State High School every Sunday starting at 1pm.
