MUSIC FESTIVAL: Local town hosting new event in 2020

A NEW music festival will be on the region’s calendar in 2020.

The Music on the Dawson music festival will make its debut in Baralaba in April and May with a line-up of award-winning artists.

Jan Bidgood and her husband John are part of the Spirit of Baralaba Festival Committee, which is going into uncharted territory to bring a music festival to Baralaba.

“There have been a lot of other similar festivals in small towns around the countryside,” Mrs Bidgood said.

“My husband and I have been going to other festivals — he says poetry and I sing a bit.

“We thought it would be nice to have something in Baralaba.”

The festival will feature some of Australia’s top country music performers and poets, including Trevor Tolton, Rosanna Ruddick, Alec Beckett, Gary Fogarty and local Ashley Cook, to name a few.

“From the Tuesday to the Friday afternoon we have walk-ups, so we encourage any amateur singers and poets to come down, register and perform a few songs,” Mrs Bidgood said.

“From Friday to Sunday we have the professional artists and these artists all have won major awards in their own right.

“Saturday night we will aim to have a big party night.”

After years of travelling to other rural music festivals around the country, Mrs Bidgood has seen first hand the economic and tourism boost it can provide communities like Baralaba.

“When we went to these festivals last year there were upwards of 100 caravans across the week,” Mrs Bidgood said.

“Many of them come from the first day to hear the walk-ups and give them a following; there buying, eating and drinking at the town.

“Anywhere from 100-150 campers would be great for our first one.”

Mrs Bidgood said everyone was welcome to attend a meeting at the Baralaba Hotel on December 1 at 2pm to discuss the ongoing organisation for the music festival.

The Music on the Dawson festival will run from April 28-May 3 at the Baralaba Showgrounds.
