Paroz Cup stays in Bilo

BILOELA hosted players from across the twin valleys in the annual Paroz Cup on Sunday, June 16.

For more than 60 years the five towns of the Callide and Dawson Valleys have come together to compete.

The Cup, donated by Mr and Mrs W Paroz in 1948, is the most prestigious of the inter-town matches with the best six players - four men and two women - competing in a doubles format.

Biloela hosted the event this year with four of the five towns taking part.

Historically Monto has been a strong competitor, winning the cup 30 times, followed by Biloela 15, Baralaba 10 and Theodore twice.

After some hard fought tennis the Biloela team retained the cup for 2019.

The CVTA team, consisting of Lydia Coulthurst, Tash Nelson, Owen Ambrey, Noah Bongers, Stuart Barrett and Greg Delroy lost only one match for the day.

CVTA treasurer and organiser of the event, Stuart Barrett, was impressed with the standard of tennis in the region.

"It's our version of the Davis Cup,” he said. "There's intense competition between the top players of the five clubs and there is some great historic and present rivalry.”

Next year Monto will host the event.

Due to player shortages in other towns, the junior division's McGovern Shield was not played this year.
