Pig contest's a win win

JAMBIN will be on target this weekend for the staging of the biggest pig hunting competition in the state with the annual King and Queen of Central Queensland Big Boar Competition.

Located at the Jambin Hotel, 380 registered pig hunters from as far as Townsville will be competing to see who will be crowned King and Queen.

One of the event organisers Jess Gustafson said the weekend had so much to offer everyone.

Jess said the event came about after a group of pig hunting aficionados thought they would put something together to help local schools.

"We provide a platform for them to raise a significant amount of money through food and drink sales,” she said.

The competition started in 2017 with just 170 registrations and has now gained national recognition.

Organisers will work closely with Capricorn Pest Management to eradicate the feral animal population and last year more than 600 feral pigs were caught.

"Last year's boar was a huge 138.9kg and that is the record so far,” Jess said.

The Banana Shire Council attends each year to do bounties for wild dogs and cats.

"The Rockhampton Croc Farm attend the event and collect all the dead pigs to feed their crocs,” she said.

"This saves them a lot of money in food.”

Competition president Matthew Weeks said the event was organised to make it a family weekend with a junior category for biggest boar.

There will be mini- sideshows, jumping castles, face painting, colouring competition and the men's shed will run a ride on train.

"I'm happy with how the competition is expanding each year and thankful for the sponsorship and volunteers who help,” Matthew said.

"There is a multi-draw at the end for all entrants and DJ Johnny Mac will be playing for entertainment and Innocent Eve on Saturday night.”

Prizes include a CF MOTO 400 Quad as a major raffle for registered hunters.

There are also rifles, car fridges, compressors, generators and hunting gear for prizes.

The Big Boar competition will include a range of events such as the dog jump and farmers' challenge throughout the day.
