Representing CQ in Rugby Union Championships

AFTER only taking up rugby union earlier this year, 12-year- old Austin Kombo has been selected to play for the Central Bushrangers U13s team.

Biloela Rugby Union Junior Development Coach, Zach Wass said the whole team is proud of Austin.

"Definitely, he is a good player,” Zach said.

"It's awesome, we are still very young in our club and to have someone in our team get on the side is awesome.”

Austin only moved to Biloela last year and took up playing the sport without realising he would so good at it.

"He has a fair bit of natural ability,” Zach said.

"His footwork, speed and ability.

"He made the team from just playing one game.”

While Austin is up against some tough competition, Zach hopes he will get far.

"Be hard to say, there is lot of talented players,” Zach said.

"He has just as much chance as anyone else.”

As part of the team, Austin has to travel training every week all around central Queensland, sometimes 600kms over a round trip for a session.

"It is very hard on the families, a lot of time and travel,” Zach said.

Austin will be travelling as a team to Brisbane next week to play in this year's Queensland State Rugby Union Championship.

Austin's family are required to pay for accommodation, food and travel for the four nights and five days.

A Go Fund Me page has been created asking for donations to support Austin.

"Very few children get the chance at that, playing for the region, so we need to try and support them,” Zach said.
