RFDS awards local hero
ALISON Hodda kept her feet humbly planted on the ground after winning the Royal Flying Doctor Service 2019 Local Hero Award for Rockhampton.
Alison has supported the RFDS since 1995 and raises funds and awareness with fellow volunteers in the Banana Shire and, despite living just over two hours from Rockhampton, she goes to its auxiliary meetings.
"From 1995 to 1999 I was a member of the Brisbane RFDS auxiliary and when we moved to Biloela in 1999 I kept on doing fundraising,” Alison said.
"Around 2011 I joined the Rockhampton RFDS auxiliary service and travel whenever I can to meetings and morning teas.”
Alison lives north of Jambin and had praise not just for the RFDS but also for the support given to it in Banana Shire.
"My husband John, our daughter Emily help out and Allen and Fiona Hayward,” Alison said. "The local support of people and businesses has been great.
"The Royal Flying Doctor Service is such an important lifeline to rural and regional areas and there is so much more they do other than just emergency flights.”
Alison helps to raise funds by selling bottle tree seedlings or making beautiful cross stitch pieces on her family farm.
Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland section) CEO Meredith Staib said the RFDS Local Hero Awards gave the service a much needed opportunity to thank and acknowledge the outstanding people who supported the service.
