Serving up sets to Brisbane

TWO schools have managed to qualify to play at an international tennis event.

Thangool State School with two teams and St Joesph's with one team will be heading to participate in the Brisbane International Red Ball State Final in Brisbane in January 2020.

Teacher Aide Cathy White travelled to the Callide Valley Tennis Association's courts in Biloela where her school's two teams competed against roughly 120 other students to earn their spot in the state final.

"It was a surprise, four of our children played in the State final two years ago, so this year it's to be heading back for those guys,” White said.

"It's very special for the new ones going through and they're some very exited children.

"They've spent a lot of time at lunch and after school practising and it's lovely for them to get reward for the hard work they've put in.”

The Thangool Aces, Thangool All-Stars and St Joesph's Girl Power were the three teams that qualified.

"The Aces team were in the mixed division and they went undefeated on the day so they earned the chance to go to the State Finals,” White said.

"There was a heavy focus on girls in sport this year so they had a girls division and our girls came second on the day and St Joseph's first so both those teams are off to Brisbane.

"The mixed team was years 3-4 students and the girls team was made up of students in years 2-4.”

Thangool State School are now in the process of organising with parents the accommodation and activities that the students will be undertaking in addition to competing in Brisbane.

"We are getting together to figure out accommodation and activities to do in Brisbane,” White said.

"We plan on watching the Big Bash in Brisbane.

"We're extremely proud of them as a school.”

The qualifications of St Joesph's and Thangool State School completes a clean sweep for Biloela schools getting through to the State Finals including the Green and Orange Ball State Final.
